Corals, sharks and various colorful fishes abound so get your waterproof camera ready. The shallow reefs are also ideal for snorkeling because you�ll be able to see plenty of sea life even if you stay close to the water’s surface. Corals in coral reefs, which are made up of animals called polyps that secrete hard external skeletons of calcium carbonate, are living perilously close to their upper temperature limits. This makes them very vulnerable to even small temperature rises of 1-2oC above the normal summer maximum. Coral reefs are sensitive and require shelter in order to thrive. If you have ever dived at an open ocean atoll, you may have noticed that it was not as flourishing as a sheltered one, since the unprotected atoll is constantly stressed by the pounding storm surf and ocean swells.
